Doug Zilkie Carver Vancouver IslandDoug was born in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, in 1961. From the age of 12 he knew that he wanted to carve wood, whittling on pieces of wood in his parents’ basement for hours at a time. At the age of 16 he became interested in Northwest Coast Haida artwork and myths, intrigued by the tales and the grandeur of the artwork. Inspired by such artists as Bill Reid, Don Yeomans and Glen Rabena, Doug began carving his own creations.

He had been working as a carpenter for many years, but in 1989 he decided to leave the Comox Valley for Vancouver to hone his art with Don Yeomans. Together they created many works of art, including two eight-foot totems, which are now on display in private collections in the United States. While in Vancouver Doug began a successful working relationship with world-renowned artist Bill Reid, helping him create the “Spirit of Haida Gwaii”, which is now displayed in the Vancouver International Airport and the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. Over the years Doug has been commissioned by the Canadian government to carve the front embassy doors in Tanzania, Africa, and a “Haida Doug Zilkies Studio, Vancouver IslandSea Ghost” mask that is displayed in the Berlin embassy. His work is also represented in many distinguished galleries of Northwest Coast Native art.

Doug currently works from his cedar studio in Fanny Bay, British Columbia, creating his traditional and contemporary Haida-style works for many private and corporate collectors, galleries, and government institutions.
